Open educational resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits their free use and re-purposing by others. Open educational resources include full courses, course materials, modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any other tools, materials, or techniques used to support access to knowledge (Hewlett Foundation) .
“Open” does not always mean free. “Free” does not always mean open. Confused? We understand! The world of open educational resources can be confusing to navigate. This guide provides a starting point for discovering OER, but the status of individual items must be evaluated before use as an OER. Truxal Library staff are available to help you understand the status of a learning resource before adopting or reusing it in a course.
Users are responsible for evaluating the license terms and/or copyright status for all resources provided in this guide. Library staff are available for guidance.
