Truxal Library Exhibit: Juneteenth 2025

Instructions

This is a Blueprint Guide. When you copy this guide, please be sure to remove any instructions before publishing it. If you have any questions, please ask Cameron.

Creating brand new exhibit guide

  • Begin by using 'create new guide' option under the Content>Guides page
  • Do not 'start fresh' - choose to 'copy content/layout from existing guide' instead
  • Select the Blueprint guide
  • Do not check the "Copy Assets" box

Overall exhibit guide settings

  • Use this name convention: Truxal Library Special Topic Guide: [name of exhibit here]
  • Make the Type/Group: Topic
  • Customize URL to reflect topic, but do not make it too long
  • Leave Subjects and Tags fields blank
  • Publish as Private, with no sharing

General accessibility guidelines

  • Don't change the color of link text
    • Don't underline anything - underlining is for links only (and will be styled that way by default)
    • Be careful changing the color of body text - if you must use a color other than the default, use a contrast checker
  • Don't use <strong> except for emphasis - i.e., to convey meaning (so a whole paragraph should never be <strong>)
    • If you simply want text to look bold, use <span style="font-weight:bold;">your text here</span> ... but do this sparingly and for good reason!
      • Note: if you use the Rich Text editor (vs. HTML editor), using the [B] button creates the <strong> tag
  • Don't TYPE IN ALL CAPS
    • To style something in all caps (use sparingly!!), do <span style="text-transform:uppercase;">your text here</span>
  • When adding lists of links, use Add > Link rather than Rich Text/HTML and add descriptions there
    • This will create list formatting, which is used by assistive technology
      • (When you add links and descriptions as separate paragraphs, there's nothing structurally associating the link and the description)
      • Note: you can/should also REUSE link assets - check if a link to your item already exists to avoid creating duplicates
  • If an image conveys meaning, it must have meaningful alt text
    • If an image is not meaningful or if alt text would just duplicate text already on the page, use empty/null alt text (alt="")
    • If an image is LINKED, the alt text needs to include the target of the link (e.g., if you link a logo to a database, the alt text should be the name of the database)
      • Exception: if there is accompanying link text, do NOT repeat the link text as the alt text - it should only be there once (the alt text should be empty)
        • E.g., linked book covers ("Book from the Catalog" assets) should not have alt text because the image and title are contained inside the same link (<a>)
  • Add links using the add link option built into Libguides rather than by encoding in the body of text.

Reminder

  • Links to e-books and streaming videos must be proxied. Do this with the built-in "Use Proxy?" option instead of including the proxy prefix in the URL.
