Welcome to this year’s Truxal Library exhibit in honor of Juneteenth. Celebrated on June 19th, Juneteenth is a recently established federal holiday that celebrates the ending of slavery by President Lincoln’s signing of the Emancipation Proclamation during the Civil War.

This year’s exhibit highlights library materials to support research about an important facet of emancipation: the role Black Union soldiers had in fighting for their own freedom in the Civil War. The Emancipation Proclamation initiated a recruitment drive that enlisted over 180,000 troops. Their enlistment was a pivotal moment in the war, leading to Union victory. This selection of library materials will support learning about this complex and sometimes overlooked aspect of Civil War history.
