Truxal Library Exhibit: Women's History Month 2025
Welcome to the Truxal Library library guide in honor of Women’s History Month 2025. This guide spotlights recently acquired biographies and memoirs of groundbreaking women. The scope includes contemporary women and those from the past, representing all disciplines, from literature to science. An attempt has been made to include women who are not so well known, and represent groups who have been traditionally marginalized. This online guide is a counterpart to a physical exhibit that is on view on the second floor of the library all March. - Amma’s Daughters: A Memoir
In this re-memory based on the published and unpublished work of Amma and Surekha, Meenal Shrivastava, Surekha’s daughter, uncovers the history of the female foot soldiers of Gandhi’s national movement in the early twentieth century. - The Birds That Wouldn’t Sing
it reveals the untold stories of the women serving in the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS), balancing their wartime contributions with the strictures of secrecy and censorship. The narrative is framed by letters from these Wrens, which provide intimate glimpses into both the personal and professional challenges they faced during World War II - Eliza Orme’s Ambitions Politics and the Law in Victorian London
Eliza Orme, despite becoming the first woman in Britain to earn a university degree in Law in 1888, leading both a political organization and a labour investigation in 1892, and participating actively in the women’s suffrage movement into the early twentieth century, is one such figure. Framed as a ‘research memoir’, Eliza Orme’s Ambitions fills out earlier scant accounts of this intriguing life, while speculating about why it has been overlooked. - The End and the Beginning

Zarah Petri was a child when her family left Hungary to establish a new life in Canada in the 1920s. In celebrating Zarah Petri, A Very Capable Life pays homage to all “ordinary” women of the early twentieth century who challenged society’s conventions for the sake of survival. - Women Physician Pioneers of the 1960s
Female physicians were nearly invisible in the United States of the mid-1960s. They were born during World War II, studied medicine amid the turmoil of the 1960s and the Vietnam War, and forged careers into leadership within the male universe of American medicine. Their individual stories are a testament to their intellect, motivation, and perseverance, told with humor, empathy, and the insight that only a member of the group could bring.
